Waders: their Breeding, Haunts and Watchers $64.99 All of the Nethersole-Thompson family contribute in some measure to this book but it is Dr Desmond Nethersole-Thompson's life-long interest in waders which gives the work its exceptional quality and authority. For well over fifty years the study of waders and their behaviour has been his passion, and his great knowledge and experience are internationally recognised. There is a bonus, too, for the reader in the particular freshness and style of his writing which conveys not only his closely observed, patient study but also the joy and satisfaction he has known in watching such intriguing and beautiful birds, mainly in their Scottish habitats. The core of the book is the comprehensive accounts of the biology and behaviour of 18 species of waders in their breeding haunts (see Contents list). In addition there are chapters on waders generally, wader spacing and dispersion, the wader watchers of past and recent times, and two final chapters on new or returning waders and those pipe-dream species that, not too fancifully, may yet breed one day in these islands.Voice is one of the headings within the species accounts but there is also an appendix of sonagrams of wader songs and calls; there are tables of data and an extensive, selected bibliography. Donald Watson has provided more than a hundred drawings to complement and embellish the text and there are 32 photographs. Jacket paintings by Donald Watson |

Patagonia Men's Watermaster Waders $300 Blackberries, barbwire, basalt. The fact is, we ask a lot of Patagonia's waders most importantly, that they keep us dry through all sorts of abuse. The new version of Patagonia's Watermaster Waders accomplishes this on a number of fronts First, Patagonia's proprietary waterproofbreathable polyester microfiber fabric package with H2No Hydrostorm barrier is quantitatively more puncture resistant than the competition. Then, because wet is wet, whether it comes from inside or out, we use lighter, more breathable fabric up top and a tougher version below. Finally, and not to be overlooked, the improved version of Patagonia's innovative internal suspension system makes it easier than ever to, uhrelieve yourself without taking off jacket or vest. Something to consider in a driving rainstorm. It all adds up to an incredibly dry, durable and lightweight pair of waders. In other words, Watermasters. Field repair kit included. |

Waders for fishing
When fly fishing in an icy cold river, nothing can ruin the day faster than suddenly finding that the pair of waders you bought is leaking. Soaked and chilled to the bone the day has been ruined.
But this situation is easily avoided if you arm yourself with knowledge about waders before you purchase them. Here are a few tips to ensure that you buy the right waders for your fly fishing adventures.
The first thing you need to consider is what you are going to be using the waders for. If they are just for fly fishing, then you will need a different style of wader than if they are going to be used for hunting as well as fishing.
You also need to consider the average temperature of water that you will be fishing in. That will determine the thickness of the waders you purchase. Once you know as precisely as possible the conditions you will be using the waders in, you will be better prepared to decide which waders will be best for you.
Waders are manufactured from a variety of materials, neoprene being one of the most popular. It is highly durable and withstands a lot of rough handling without damage. There are two thicknesses of neoprene from which to choose, 3mm and 5 mm. If you do a lot of moving around where you fish or don't live in a very cold climate, then go with the 3mm variety. If you are very stationary while fishing or live in a very cold location, then you will want the 5 mm variety.
Although neoprene has ruled the fly fishing waders market for some time, the last few years has seen an upsurge in popularity for breathable materials such as Gore-Tex. These breathable materials allow the sweat to escape from them, even underwater. This is a huge advantage when fly fishing on a hot summer day. Though breathable materials do not have the same insulation capability as neoprene, a pair of fleece long-johns or jogging bottoms can be worn underneath them for added warmth.
Nylon or rubber waders are the budget choice. They are not breathable and do not offer the same insulation as neoprene or the breathable materials. This could be very dangerous in cold weather when the angler sweats and then gets chilled, possibly even leading to hypothermia so if you are going to buy these then make sure that you wear adequate thermal clothing underneath.
When purchasing waders, it is important not to get a pair that is too tight. This is a very common mistake. People want to look good in their waders, so they will look good in trophy pictures. Remember, fly fishing is not a fashion show. It is much more important to be comfortable for the many hours you are fishing, than to be miserable most of the day but look good in a picture that takes 10 second to take. A good rule of thumb is to wear a pair of jogging bottoms when you try on your waders. If the waders fit loosely over the under trousers, then they are a good fit.
So there you go, some top tips there - so what are you wading for?
