Oregon Pheasant Hunting: Things You Need to Know
Upland game hunting in Oregon offers some of the best hunting due to its diverse habitats. It supports nine different species of upland game birds. They are the Wild Turkey, pheasant, valley quail, mountain quail, chukar, the hungarian partridge, ruffed grouse, blue grouse and the sage-grouse.
Where to find the birds
In eastern Oregon's agriculture areas some of the best pheasant hunting can be found. Areas such as the Columbia River Basin and the farmlands located in river drainages around the Owyhee River and the Malheur Rivers. Pheasant can also be found by looking in idle fields and fence rows that are near grain production sites.
Season and Licenses
To hunt pheasant in Oregon you will need a valid hunting license. This hunting license should include an upland game bird validation and a Harvest Information Program (or HIP) validation; both are needed in order to hunt pheasant. The ODFW (Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife) also plants pheasant in four western wildlife areas during the fall; you may need an extra validation to hunt these areas. The bird season lasts from September 1 through January 31.
What does it cost?
There are over 30 different pheasant hunting preserves, outfitters, and guides in Oregon. A hunting trip can cost anywhere from $100 for a trespass permit, to an all inclusive ranch experience at $1500. Most outfitters and lodges run between $250 to $500 a day. The prices can vary greatly so you will need to take a close look at what is included and decide how much of the trip you want to handle yourself.
Your Most Valuable Asset: The Dog
Another good addition to your hunting trip is a good bird dog. A well trained bird dog can not only help you find birds, but can also help in the retrieval of downed birds. There are two types of bird dogs used to hunt pheasant; the flushers and the pointers. One will find the game and give chase until they take to the skies, or flush out, while the other freeze and "point" to the area or in the direction they smell the birds. A well trained bird dog can be a valuable asset to your pheasant hunting team for these reasons.
Better safe than dead
Whether you decide to invest in an all inclusive pheasant hunting trip or to go it alone and plan your own, you should always follow some general hunting safety rules. You should always know the location of your fellow hunters and your dog, also keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot and insure that your muzzle is always pointed in a safe direction. Be sure of your target before you take the shot, be aware of what is around it and in front and behind it; also it always a good idea to wear the blaze orange color so that you can be easily spotted by your fellow hunters.
Oregon has many great things to offer pheasant hunters. Nowadays it is easier than ever to access information to make your trip a successful one. Look to the internet to help plan and know what to expect from your trip to this beautiful state. There is a wealth of information out there on numerous sites, good planning can make your trip not only a successful one but a fun and stress free one as well.
