Wait At Least 5 Hours Before Tracking a Wounded Elk or Deer
This subject is a heated debate among some hunters and for good reason. Everyone has their own idea and opinion when it comes to this issue. I'm sure there's some of us that can admit that we've lost an animal either because we didn't wait long enough or we waited too long and predatory animals got to the meat and there wasn't much left the following day.
This brings back a very distinct memory of an elk hunt many years ago. I was hunting spike elk in the Rocky Mountains by myself. I hiked into my spot well before dark and as it started to get light I could hear several elk coming down the mountain making grunting and chirping noises the whole way. As you can imagine it sent my adrenaline through the roof and I was starting to get the buck fever shakes. Even more so because the elk were going to pass about 60 yards in front of me which would make for a great shot. As they got closer I setup and took aim. As soon as they stepped into the open I could see 5 bull elk. 2 spikes and several other bigger bulls. I took aim at the vitals of the biggest spike and pulled the trigger. Boom! I could tell that he was hit good, or so I thought.
He took off running down the hill as did the other elk. I almost let out my usual Indian war cry but decided not to because he was still on the hoof. So I sat for what seemed like an hour and couldn't contain myself anymore so I started tracking him. He was leaving a good blood trail so I naturally thought this should be easy. Well after about 25 minutes of hiking I came into a thick patch of pines and was making my way in there when I spotted him bedded down. Well he spotted me too and took off downhill like a bolt of lighting. My heart sank down to my boots. I started cussing myself thinking I should've waited much longer. Apparently my shot wasn't as good as I thought it was. This time I waited for 3 hours and then took off after his trail again. To make the story short I tracked him for 2 miles until it got dark and the next day I brought some help and my horses to make better time.
Well after 3 days of tracking his blood trail the blood trail finally ending, there was nothing we could do. I was heart broken and ended my hunting season for that year. I had already shot my elk and wasn't going to shoot another elk that season.
Let's say I learned a very valuable lesson that elk season and I have never lost another animal from the day forward.
So how long should we wait if we think the animal is wounded? In my opinion speaking from experience if there's any doubt at all at how good your shot was then you should wait a minimum of 5+ hours unless it's almost dark then you should wait until morning. While you do run the risk of bears, lions or coyotes eating your animal, that's hunting and that's the risk we take. At least if a predatory animal eats the carcass then there's nothing we can do about it. But we can control spooking them and having them run off and never knowing what happened to them.
I know if I would've waited at least 5 hours for that elk to bleed out then the chances of me having back straps that night would've been great. What a great lesson I learned though.
It's lessons like these that I plan on passing down to my children in hopes they don't repeat the same mistakes I did in my youth.
Be safe and good hunting.
